Continuing Pride and Prejudice

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

I have finished the second novel in a series by Sharon Lathan, written as a continuation of the story of Pride and Prejudice.  The first, Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, starts from the beginning of their marriage through the early spring of their first year together.  I wrote a brief review here.  The second, Loving Mr. Darcy, continues that story.

It is interesting to see the development of their relationship, and the continued deepening of their love.  However, I have to say that I am glad I didn't spend money to buy these books.  The description of their intimacy, I feel, is a little much.  Once per chapter, if not more, there is a description of their interludes.  Maybe I am prudish, but I feel this much detail is a little excessive.  There are some aspects of a marriage relationship that belong solely between a husband and wife, and even literary characters such as Darcy and Lizzy are entitled to some privacy.

Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy

Written by Sharon Lathan

Rating:  8.2 out of 10

I received this book from Mom for Christmas this year.  (Thanks, Mom!)  And since we had a long plane ride back to Maui, I started it.  Managed to finish it in a little more than 24 hours.  On the whole, I liked this book.  One of the issues I have with modernizing the Pride and Prejudice story is changing the moral positions of the characters.  I read a different update novel, and never finished it because it implied that Mr. Darcy was almost as much of a louse as Wickham.  That will never do!

This novel explores the marriage relationship of Darcy and Elizabeth.  However, Darcy's character as a gentleman is preserved from the outset.  I did find the intimate scenes to be very steamy, and if I knew how to blush, I probably would have!  (It didn't help that my oldest DD was trying to read the book over my shoulder on the airplane.)

On the whole, an acceptable advancement of the relationship.  I probably wouldn't have purchased the book myself, but would check it out from the library.  I might read it again as well.
